Why Your Car Squeaks While Driving — Causes and How to Fix It

Squeaking while driving or braking is a very common complaint. It not only affects your comfort during the ride, but in some cases it can also signal a more serious issue.

Today, we’ll explain how to identify the source of the noise and how to eliminate it.

Common Reasons Your Car Squeaks
1. General wear and tear
Over time, gaps between plastic panels increase, causing them to vibrate, rattle, or rub against each other while driving.

2. Harsh driving conditions
High speeds, rough roads, vibrations, and a heavily loaded cabin all contribute to squeaks. A gentler driving style helps reduce unwanted noise.

3. Poor maintenance
Certain components require proper lubrication. If lubrication is missing or low quality, friction increases — and squeaks appear.
How to Remove Interior Squeaks
Interior squeaks, rattles, and “chirping” noises usually come from two main sources:
1. Loose fasteners
Check and tighten all bolts, screws, visor mounts, hinges, ashtray fittings, and other interior attachments. Even one loose fastener can create noise on rough roads.

2. Plastic interior trim

Plastic panels shift against each other, creating tension and sudden movement — the result is squeaking.
To test this, slide a plastic card between the panels (as a temporary spacer) or gently press them while driving. If the noise disappears, you’ve found the cause.
When squeaks come from trim panels, the best solution is anti-squeak materials. These are soft, dense, self-adhesive foams that cushion plastic-to-plastic contact.
StP offers three effective anti-squeak products:
  • StP Bitoplast
  • StP Biplast
  • StP Madelin
They come in tape form, making them ideal for treating panel joints and seams.
Fixing Exterior Squeaks
Common sources of squeaks outside the cabin include:
1. Worn brake pads
If your car squeaks when braking, replace the pads as soon as possible.

2. Newly installed pads
Incorrect installation can cause noise. Proper repositioning solves the issue.

3. Ball joints in the suspension
Squeaking when turning often means worn ball joints, which require replacement.

4. Wiper blades
A simple silicone lubrication can eliminate squeaks.
When You Should Visit a Workshop
