Car Squeaks

Squeaking while driving or braking is a very common issue. It not only affects driving comfort, but in some cases can also indicate a more serious problem.

Today, we’ll explain how to identify the source of the noise and eliminate it.

Common Reasons Your Car Squeaks
1. General wear and tear
Over time, gaps between plastic panels widen, causing them to vibrate, rattle, or rub against each other while driving.
2. Harsh driving conditions
High speeds, rough roads, vibrations, and a heavily loaded vehicle all contribute to squeaks and rattles. A smoother driving style can help reduce unwanted noise.
3. Poor maintenance
Certain components require proper lubrication. If lubrication is missing or of poor quality, friction increases, and squeaks start to develop.
How to Remove Interior Squeaks
Interior squeaks, rattles, and creaking noises usually come from two main sources:
1. Loose fasteners
Check and tighten all bolts, screws, sun visor mounts, hinges, ashtray fittings, and other interior attachments. Even a single loose fastener can create noise on rough roads.
2. Plastic interior trim
Plastic panels shift against each other, resulting in squeaks and rattles.
To test this, insert a plastic card between the panels (as a temporary spacer) or gently press on them while driving. If the noise disappears, you’ve found the cause.
When squeaks come from trim panels, the best solution is anti-squeak materials. These are soft, dense, self-adhesive foams that cushion plastic-to-plastic contact.
StP offers three effective anti-squeak products:
• StP Bitoplast
• StP Biplast
• StP Madelin
These materials are available in tape form, making them ideal for treating panel joints and seams.
Fixing Exterior Squeaks
Common sources of squeaks outside the vehicle include:
1. Worn brake pads
If your car squeaks when braking, the brake pads should be replaced as soon as possible.
2. Newly installed brake pads
Incorrect installation can cause noise. Reinstalling the pads correctly usually resolves the issue.
3. Suspension ball joints
Squeaking while turning often indicates worn ball joints, which require replacement.
4. Wiper blades
Applying silicone lubricant can help eliminate squeaks.
When You Should Visit a Workshop

If you can’t identify the source of the squeak, we highly recommend visiting a specialist workshop.

Unusual noise may indicate a serious mechanical problem — catching it early can help prevent expensive repairs and keep you safe on the road.
