How to Soundproof a Car Floor

It is important to identify the areas with the highest vibration load and treat them accordingly. No matter how many layers are applied, if the sound deadening is placed where it is not needed, there will be no result from the vehicle's noise and vibration insulation. Sound insulation depends on the body configuration. If it is a sedan, only the cabin floor is treated. If the vehicle is a wagon or hatchback, the sound deadening work also covers the luggage compartment up to the rear door.

We remove the seats from the vehicle interior. We remove the centre console and the sill trims. We remove the floor covering, dismantle the interior, clear the treatment area and clean and degrease the metal.

Maximum and medium vibration absorption is applied to the areas with the highest vibration load: the arches, engine compartment bulkhead, front floor, and the areas under the driver's and passenger's seats. Medium-load areas include the floor under the rear passengers and the shelf under the rear seat.

The sound-insulating membrane is applied everywhere except the shelf under the rear seat. Thanks to this membrane, the overall hum and noise from the vehicle's underbody and arches is noticeably reduced. We then reassemble all parts.

What Car Floor Sound Deadening Provides

  • The manufacturer equips the suspension and engine compartment with vibration absorbers, such as silent blocks and engine mounts, but they are not sufficient for complete noise and vibration insulation. This is where sound deadening comes in as an additional measure for driver comfort and health. Because the underbody emits low-frequency noise, the task is to suppress it or at least shift it into the mid-to-high frequency range. With incorrect vehicle sound deadening, low-frequency vibrations will be transmitted into the cabin, floor, doors and even the roof.
  • From a sound insulation point of view, a vehicle consists of several planes. The vehicle floor, together with the roof, is one of the largest. While the roof is essentially a straight sheet of metal with reinforcements, the underbody structure is much more complex. It contains many elements: arches, longitudinal members, stampings and welded joints. Therefore, car floor sound deadening has its own specific requirements.

Low frequencies are dangerous because they are barely perceived by human hearing, but are felt well by the internal organs. The larger and heavier the vehicle, the lower the frequencies it emits while driving. Proper sound deadening of the vehicle cabin floor completely suppresses dangerous vibrations and reduces the overall level of road noise.
