How to do hood sound deadening

As a rule, practically all car manufacturers save on sound deadening of such main body elements as the roof, floor, boot and doors; the inside of the hood is covered, at best, with trim. It is very important that sound deadening be installed using rolling rollers. If a special tool is not used, the effectiveness of the sound deadening materials may be reduced due to poor adhesion to the metal.

We apply and roll a mastic-based vibration isolator onto the prepared surface. The foil layer effectively reflects sound waves. We apply a sound-absorbing membrane to the trim, providing a high level of blocking of medium and high frequencies. The mounting adhesive has a super-sticky composition, thanks to which the materials do not peel away from complex curved surfaces. The entire hood sound deadening process takes no more than two hours.

First, vibration isolation materials are applied to the hood, then sound insulation that absorbs sound vibrations is installed. The process does not take much time because it does not require the removal and installation of many parts.

Materials for hood sound deadening

The general principle of hood insulation comes down to applying two types of materials: a vibration isolator that blocks low-frequency hum, and a sound-absorbing membrane that neutralises the rest of the frequency range audible to humans. In some cases, only a vibration isolator is used, or insulation that combines the functions of both types of material.

Before the work is carried out, the optimal set of materials is selected, which must work well under harsh operating conditions when exposed to temperature and technical fluids. For example, for car hood sound deadening we use Comfortmat or Aerocell materials.

The vibration damper is glued to the metal surface of the hood, and the sound-insulating membrane is applied to the inside of the factory trim. Incorrect layering of the materials will not produce the proper effect.

Of course, many car owners will say that modern cars are very quiet and there is no point in spending money on hood sound deadening! Yes, it is everyone's choice! But let us explain a little what additional hood insulation is all about.

Firstly, it is needed to muffle sounds at high engine speeds — even in a new car they can be clearly heard. And in higher-mileage vehicles the noise level is even greater, for example due to wear of engine camshaft parts, the gearbox or accessory bearings.

Secondly, car owners will notice the difference in winter: the car's engine will warm up faster and retain heat for longer due to the use of additional materials. Accordingly, the vehicle interior will warm up significantly faster.
